Why social media accounts need a proxy

Many of the networks social teams use are blocked in some of the countries they work from. From mainland China, GreatFire’s recent tests fail for Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, Telegram, Discord, Reddit, Pinterest and Threads. In Russia, Facebook and Instagram have been blocked since Meta was declared an extremist organisation in March 2022, Discord since October 2024, and Telegram was almost completely blocked in the first half of April 2026; OONI’s measurements from Russia in the 30 days to 18 October 2026 were mostly anomalous or confirmed blocks for Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn.

The networks’ own rules point to one person, or one purpose, per account. Meta’s Terms say to create only one account — your own — and not to share your password or give others access to it. LinkedIn allows one account per person, in their real name. X allows several accounts only when each serves a non-duplicative purpose, such as separate accounts for different cities, and TikTok’s Terms forbid using automated scripts to interact with the service. Shared channels run on permissions instead: YouTube lets an owner give people access to a channel without handing over the Google Account.

So what a proxy should fix is where each login comes from. On a shared office line every account arrives from the same address, and a rotating exit puts each session somewhere new. A static ISP IP gives each account one steady location; it doesn’t lift any platform limit — Threads, for one, caps a profile at 250 published posts in 24 hours whatever the IP. In our hourly checks at 03:05 UTC on 18 October 2026, all 11 networks we check loaded through Proxy302 residential exits in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Brazil and Indonesia; WhatsApp and Signal aren’t in those checks.

Set up social media proxies in three steps

1. Pick your network

   Open the page for the network your accounts are on. It says which country to choose and where the proxy goes — an antidetect browser, a phone or the app’s own proxy setting.

2. Choose the country before you pay

   Use the country the account normally logs in from, or the one its audience is in, and keep it for every session. Where the network is blocked, pick a country where it works.

3. Check the exit before you log in

   Open an IP check page inside the browser profile or app that uses the proxy and confirm the country, then sign in to the account.

   Expected result The account signs in from its own IP, in its own country.
