How to Check Your Proxy's IP, Country and ISP (and Why Checkers Disagree)

A four-step check, the commands to run, and a real test of three lookup services on 18 October 2026 — so you know which field to trust.

Check your proxy in 30 seconds

  1. Open a lookup page through the proxy

In the browser profile, extension or app that uses the proxy, open ipinfo.io. In a terminal, run the first command below. ipinfo.io is also what our own connectivity probe uses to confirm every exit.

Expected result Fields ip, city, region, country and org (the ASN and the network that owns the IP).

  2. Compare with what you bought

In My assets, open the proxy: the region on the asset should match the country field. A static ISP IP should show the same ip every time; a rotating residential proxy shows a new ip after it rotates.

  3. Run the direct control

Run the same lookup without the proxy. If both answers show the same ip, the tool is not using the proxy.

  4. Check the network type

Read the org field. A residential exit belongs to a consumer ISP — in our hourly checks on 18 October 2026 they were networks such as Vodafone GmbH, Virgin Media Limited, Starhub Ltd, INDOSAT Internet Network Provider. A datacenter IP belongs to a hosting company.

The same check from a terminal

Scroll horizontally with the arrow keys to read all content.

# 1) Through the proxy (copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME, PASSWORD from My assets)
curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json
# SOCKS5 asset: let the proxy resolve DNS too
curl -x socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json
# 2) Direct, for comparison
curl https://ipinfo.io/json

The Connect page in the console prints a ready version of the first command with your own endpoint. Use socks5h:// rather than socks5:// so DNS lookups also go through the proxy.

Looked up at 00:03 UTC on 18 October 2026. All three agreed on the country every time; for none of the three addresses did all three services agree on the city. These are anycast addresses served from many places, the hardest case for any database. ip-api.com also marked 8.8.8.8 as a proxy.

Why the city — or even the country — can look wrong

Every lookup site reads its own database, and each one learns locations differently. MaxMind publishes how often its city data is right within 50 km: 60% of IPs in the United States, 67% in the United Kingdom, 71% in Germany, 100% in Singapore, 83% in Brazil and 76% in Indonesia; in Japan 41% of IPs have no city at all. Trust the country first, the city second.

The network type is a classification too. IPinfo labels the organisation behind each ASN as isp, hosting, business, education or government; MaxMind gives a user type (residential, cellular, hosting, business and others) and a connection type (Cable/DSL, Cellular, Corporate, Satellite). Both also sell proxy detection — MaxMind has an is_residential_proxy flag and IPinfo a residential proxy field — so a "clean" result on one site is not a promise about every platform.

When you generate a rotating residential proxy for a chosen country, the Proxy302 console verifies the exit region before handing it over, and stops delivery if the exit landed somewhere else.

What each field tells you

What each field tells you
CriterionWhat it showsWhat to check
ipThe address the site seesNot your own address; stays the same on a static IP
countryWhere databases place the IPMatches the region in My assets
city / regionThe database's best guessClose enough — cities often differ between sites
org / ASNThe network that owns the IPA consumer ISP for residential and static ISP; a hosting company for datacenter
proxy / hosting flagsThe site's own risk labelsCompare two services before you decide anything

Field names differ by site; ipinfo.io uses ip, city, region, country and org.

Can a site still see your real IP?

Yes, through WebRTC. The standard that governs it, RFC 8828, warns that WebRTC's STUN checks do not go through the proxy and reveal the public IP address of the client unless the browser forces media through the proxy too. Antidetect browsers have a WebRTC setting for this; in a normal browser, use a WebRTC leak test on the same profile.

DNS is the other leak: with socks5:// your own computer resolves the hostname. Use socks5h:// in curl, or a tool that resolves DNS through the proxy.

Reputation scores are opinions. Scamalytics, for example, shows a fraud score, the operator and the proxy status of an IP, and describes its statements as an opinion based on limited information. Use them as a hint, not a verdict.

Quick fixes

The lookup shows your own IP

Check Does the direct control show the same ip? Is the proxy set on this browser profile or app — not only somewhere else on the computer?

Fix Set the proxy where the traffic starts (profile, extension or app), then repeat the lookup.

407 Proxy Authentication Required

Check Our gateway answers 407 to a missing or wrong username or password — we tested it on 18 October 2026.

Fix Copy the four fields again with Copy all in My assets; do not retype the password.

curl: "User was rejected by the SOCKS5 server"

Check That is the SOCKS5 port refusing the credentials, again from our own test.

Fix Use the credentials of this asset and the protocol shown on it (HTTP or SOCKS5).

Right country, wrong city

Check Do two lookup sites disagree?

Fix That is normal for IP databases. Decide by the country, or by the city only if your platform needs it.

The org is a hosting company

Check Is this a datacenter asset?

Fix For logins and stores use a static ISP or rotating residential IP instead.

Common questions

Which IP checker is the most accurate?

None is right every time. In our test the three services always agreed on the country but placed the same IP in different cities. Use one service for routine checks and a second one when something looks off.

How do I know a proxy is residential?

Look at the org or ASN: a residential exit belongs to a consumer ISP or mobile carrier, not a hosting company. Databases classify networks by type, so the label can differ by site.

Why does my proxy show a different country than I bought?

First check the asset's region in My assets and repeat the lookup on a second site. If both show another country, contact support — for rotating residential the console already refuses to deliver an exit outside the region you picked.

Can websites detect that I use a proxy?

Some can try. IP data companies sell VPN, proxy and residential-proxy flags. What you control is consistency: one clean IP per account, the right country and no WebRTC or DNS leaks.

  1. Our lookup of three public IPs on three services

    Local example · Checked:

At 00:03 UTC on 18 October 2026 we looked up 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9 on ipinfo.io, ipwho.is and ip-api.com and recorded the city and country each returned.

  2. Our requests to the Proxy302 gateway with wrong credentials

    Local example · Checked:

At 00:03 UTC on 18 October 2026, from a network in Singapore, we sent requests through proxy.proxy302.com:2222 (HTTP) and :3333 (SOCKS5) with no or wrong credentials and recorded the responses.

  3. Proxy302 connectivity probe source (exit identity check)

    Product observation · Checked:

Read from the probe source on 18 October 2026: before and after each round it requests ipinfo.io/json through the proxy (falling back to ipwho.is) and discards the round if the IP changed or the country is wrong.

  4. Proxy302 console: generation, My assets and Connect page

    Product observation · Checked:

Read from the console source on 18 October 2026: rotating residential generation shows "Verifying exit region…" and, when the exit country differs, discards the line with "The exit country did not match the selected country"; My assets offers View credentials and Copy all; the Connect page prints a ready curl command that requests ipinfo.io/json through your proxy.
