Why Telegram needs a proxy

Telegram is blocked in Russia and in mainland China. Russia restricted Telegram from August 2025 and almost completely blocked it in early April 2026, and OONI measurements from Russia in the 30 days to 18 October 2026 still show telegram.org mostly anomalous. GreatFire's tests from mainland China fail for telegram.org and show interference on web.telegram.org.

Proxy support is built into Telegram. Its apps accept a SOCKS5 proxy with a server, a port and an optional username and password, and some apps also take HTTP. Because the proxy is set inside Telegram, only Telegram traffic uses it — browsers, banking apps and everything else on the device keep their usual connection.

Public MTProto proxies from free lists are shared with strangers. Channel admins, community managers and bot developers who run several accounts need something steadier: a static ISP IP is assigned to you alone and stays fixed for the term, so every account, userbot session and bot keeps one stable address.

Set up a Telegram proxy in 4 steps

1. Open the Telegram setup

   The “Configure Telegram proxies” button at the top of this page opens the static ISP page with Billing set to Per IP and term, the Social operations use case and Telegram proxy selected. Under Connection settings pick the Region, keep Term at 1 month and Protocol at SOCKS5, set Quantity to the number of IPs you need (one for each account and bot session, up to 100 at a time), then click Review cost and generate.

   Expected result The “Your configuration” panel shows Per IP and term, your region, SOCKS5 and the quantity.

2. Copy the details

   Open My assets, choose View credentials on each IP and copy the endpoint (host:port), username and password.

3. Add it on your phone

   In Telegram open Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy (Proxy Settings on Android) → Add Proxy, choose SOCKS5 and enter server, port, username and password. Save and tap the proxy so it becomes active.

   Expected result The proxy shows as connected and chats load.

4. Add it on desktop or in a browser profile

   In Telegram Desktop open Settings → Advanced → Connection type → Use custom proxy, add a SOCKS5 proxy with the same four fields. For a second account on its own IP, use another device, another Telegram Desktop install or web.telegram.org in an antidetect browser profile with that account's proxy.

   Before continuing Give each account and each bot session its own IP; don't run several accounts through one proxy.

Telethon takes the proxy as a dict and needs python-socks installed. Keep one static IP per session file so each account always connects from the same address.
