How to Set a Proxy for ChatGPT: Browser, Desktop App and Phone

Three places you use ChatGPT, three ways to set a proxy: the website in a browser, the desktop apps for macOS and Windows, and the phone apps. Each part ends with a check, so you see which IP ChatGPT really gets.

What a proxy does not change

This article is about network setup, not about whether a service is available. OpenAI states that accessing or offering access to its services from locations outside its supported list may result in an account being blocked or suspended; mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Russia are not on that list. A proxy does not make ChatGPT available where it is not and does not change OpenAI’s terms. If your account was already restricted, the account ban guide explains what OpenAI says about the reasons and how to appeal.

Before you start: what you need

You need a proxy address in a country OpenAI supports: HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The GPT / Grok ISP gives you a fixed IP for 30 days at 10 PTC; you choose HTTP or SOCKS5 when you order, and the details are in My assets. The ChatGPT proxy page explains the plan, and the steps below work with any proxy that has an address, a port, a username and a password. Whatever you use, keep one IP for one account: signing in from a different country every day is the pattern to avoid.

ChatGPT in a browser

  1. Option 1: the Proxy302 browser extension

It sets the proxy in one browser only, so the rest of your computer keeps its normal network. It works with HTTP proxies only. The browser extension guide has the steps, from loading the extension to pressing Connect.

  2. Option 2 on a Mac: the system proxy

Open the Apple menu → System Settings → Network, pick your network, click Details, then Proxies. Turn on Web Proxy (HTTP) and Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) and enter the same server and port in both, or turn on SOCKS Proxy if your IP is SOCKS5. If the proxy needs a login, turn on “Proxy server requires password” and enter the username and password.

Expected result Apple’s help lists exactly these protocols: Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) and SOCKS Proxy.

  3. Option 2 on Windows: the system proxy

Open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. Under Manual proxy setup, click Set up next to “Use a proxy server”, turn it on, enter the address and port, and click Save.

Before continuing Microsoft’s page shows fields for the address and the port only, not for a username and password. For a proxy with a login, use the browser extension instead.

  4. Check the exit, then open ChatGPT

Open https://ipinfo.io/json in the same browser. The country must be the one you bought. Only then open chatgpt.com.

Before continuing If the page shows your own IP, that browser is not using the proxy. Some browsers keep their own proxy setting instead of the system one, so open the browser’s own network settings and check there.

The ChatGPT apps for macOS and Windows

We found no statement in OpenAI’s documentation about proxy settings in the ChatGPT desktop apps, and none that says they follow the system proxy. Do not assume it: a program may use the operating system’s proxy, its own setting, or ignore both. So test it instead of guessing.

Set the system proxy as in the section above, then run the test below. If the app still loads with a wrong port, it is not using the proxy, and you have two options: use ChatGPT in a browser where the extension or the system proxy works, or use a tool that sends a whole program through a proxy.

The ChatGPT apps for macOS and Windows (test)

  1. Set the system proxy to your real proxy

Use the Mac or Windows steps above, and check the exit with ipinfo.io in a browser first.

  2. Change only the port to a wrong number

For example add 1 to the port. Close ChatGPT completely and open it again.

Before continuing Do not leave it like this: it is a test.

  3. Watch the app

If chats stop loading or you see a network error, the app is using the system proxy. If it works as before, it is ignoring the proxy.

  4. Put the right port back and reopen the app

Send one message to confirm it works through the proxy.

The ChatGPT app on a phone

A phone applies a proxy to one Wi-Fi network, so it works only while you are on that network and not on mobile data. Most apps and the browser follow it, but Android’s developer documentation warns that some apps may ignore the system proxy. The iPhone and Android guides show the screens in detail.

The ChatGPT app on a phone (steps)

  1. iPhone

Open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the info button next to your network, scroll to the proxy setting (Apple lists “Set up an HTTP proxy”), choose Manual, enter the server and port, and turn on authentication to enter the username and password. Use an HTTP proxy: Apple’s help does not describe SOCKS5 there.

  2. Android

Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet, tap your network, tap Edit, then Advanced options. Under Proxy, pick the type, enter the settings and tap Save. Google notes that some steps vary by device.

  3. Check, then open the app

In the phone’s browser open https://ipinfo.io/json and read the country. Then open the ChatGPT app. Because the app is not guaranteed to follow the setting, treat the browser check as proof of the setting, not of the app.

How to check the exit IP

The check is the same everywhere: ask a site which IP it sees, going through the proxy. The ipinfo.io answer has the ip, country, city and org fields; org is the network that owns the address. The guide on checking a proxy’s IP, country and ISP explains each field. From a terminal you can test the proxy on its own, for an HTTP proxy and for a SOCKS5 proxy:

Check the exit from a terminal

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json

curl -x socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json

Replace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets. Use the first line for an HTTP proxy and the second for SOCKS5.

Quick fixes

ipinfo.io shows your real IP

Check The browser or system is not using the proxy.

Fix Re-check the address and port, then close the browser fully and open it again.

407 or a login window keeps coming back

Check The proxy rejected the username or password.

Fix Copy the details again from My assets. Windows’ system proxy has no login fields, so use the browser extension.

The page does not load at all

Check The port is wrong, the IP lease has ended, or your network cannot reach the proxy.

Fix Run the curl test above. From mainland China start the helper tool first.

The country is right but ChatGPT shows an error or asks you to verify

Check The IP works as a proxy, but the service has its own rules.

Fix Do not retry again and again. Read the account ban guide and OpenAI’s own messages.

Prices and limits

The GPT / Grok ISP costs 10 PTC for 30 days (1 PTC = US$1), and a first subscription can be 50% off. HTTP is the default protocol and SOCKS5 is optional. There is no free trial; the smallest purchase of a static IP is one IP for one day. Availability by city changes and is shown on the order page.

FAQ

Do the ChatGPT desktop apps use the system proxy?

OpenAI does not say. Use the wrong-port test above: if the app stops loading with a wrong port, it follows the system proxy.

Should I choose HTTP or SOCKS5?

HTTP if you use the browser extension or the Windows system proxy, which has no login fields; SOCKS5 works in the Mac system proxy and in tools that support it. Each IP keeps the protocol it was bought with.

Will a proxy make ChatGPT available in my country?

No. A proxy changes only the network exit. OpenAI’s supported-country list and terms still apply.

Can I use the same IP on my computer and my phone?

Yes, but keep it for one person and one account, and check the exit on each device.
