ChatGPT Account Banned? Reasons and How to Appeal

OpenAI lists four kinds of reasons for a deactivation. Match yours, then appeal through the right channel.

Why OpenAI deactivates accounts

OpenAI’s help article on deactivated accounts gives four kinds of reasons: violations of its Usage Policies — sexual content, child exploitation, violence and self-harm, scams, hate, harassment and spam among them; breaches of its Terms of Service, such as getting past security or access restrictions, sharing an account or API keys inappropriately, or using the service in ways that harm others; suspicious activity that suggests the account was compromised; and repeated violations after warnings.

Location counts too. OpenAI’s list of supported countries leaves out mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Belarus and Iran, and OpenAI warns that accessing or offering access to its services from outside the list may get an account blocked or suspended.

The Terms of Use (rest of world, effective 1 January 2026) add the account rules: you may not share your login or make your account available to anyone else; you must be at least 13, and under-18s need a parent’s or guardian’s permission; and OpenAI may suspend or close an account for breaching the Terms or Usage Policies, to comply with the law, or when use could cause risk or harm. Free accounts unused for more than a year may be closed after notice.

Each reason, and what you can do about it

Each reason, and what you can do about it
ItemWhat it coversWhat you can do
Usage Policies violationWhat you ask ChatGPT to make or doAppeal if it was a mistake; content rules don’t depend on your connection
Breach of the Terms of ServiceGetting past access restrictions, sharing the account or API keys, harmful useAppeal with the context; from now on one account per person, with keys kept private
Security concernActivity that looks like someone else got into the account — often a temporary suspensionChange your password, rotate your API keys, then appeal with the dates and any charges you don’t recognize
Repeated violations after warningsWarnings that weren’t acted on within the time givenAppeal and explain what you have changed
Unsupported countryAccess from outside the countries on OpenAI’s listOpenAI warns this may get an account blocked or suspended; an appeal doesn’t change the list

Appeal a deactivated ChatGPT account

  1. Use the link in the deactivation email

Appeal through the link in the email OpenAI sent you. OpenAI says this routes your request to the right team and gets it reviewed fastest.

  2. No email? Use the form or the chat

If you can’t get to that email, file the appeal at openai.com/form/appeal. If you never received an email but lost access, ask through the chat in OpenAI’s Help Center.

  3. Give OpenAI the details it asks for

Your User ID and Org ID, what you use the account for, the dates of any suspected break-in and, for charges you don’t recognize, date, amount, last four card digits, card brand, issuing bank and billing ZIP code.

  4. If someone got into your account

Change your password and rotate your API keys before you appeal, and say what you have done to fix the problem.

What happens to ChatGPT Plus or Pro

Self-serve subscriptions billed directly by OpenAI stop renewing when an account is banned. The subscription may stay active until the end of the billing period, but the ban stops you from using the account.

If the ban is lifted before the subscription ends, eligible Stripe subscriptions can start renewing again once all restrictions are lifted. Subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play are not restored automatically — contact OpenAI Support if your account comes back without its plan. The Terms say payments are non-refundable except where required by law.

Where a proxy fits — and where it doesn’t

A proxy changes your network exit, not OpenAI’s rules. OpenAI warns that access from outside its supported countries may get an account blocked, and its help article lists getting past access restrictions as a breach of the Terms. A different IP won’t bring back a deactivated account either: only an appeal can.

What a fixed IP does is keep each person’s sessions on one fixed address in one country, instead of a VPN exit that many people share and that changes between sessions. Give every person their own account and their own IP, so nobody’s activity lands on someone else’s address.

Proxy302’s static ISP IPs are leased per IP and term — US$7.99 for 30 days, the same price in every country — and stay the same during your lease. For scripts that call the OpenAI API, a datacenter IP costs US$3.99 for 30 days. Each IP keeps the protocol you pick at purchase, HTTP or SOCKS5.

ChatGPT ban FAQ

Why was my ChatGPT account deactivated?

OpenAI names four kinds of reasons: Usage Policies violations; breaches of its Terms, such as getting past access restrictions or sharing an account or API keys; suspected compromise; and repeated violations after warnings. Using it from outside the supported countries can also get an account blocked.

Can I appeal a ChatGPT ban?

Yes. Use the link in the deactivation email; without it, openai.com/form/appeal; if you got no email at all, the Help Center chat. Include your User ID and Org ID.

Will a new IP or a VPN bring my account back?

No. Only an appeal can. OpenAI also warns that accessing its services from outside its supported countries may get an account blocked in the first place.

Is ChatGPT available in China or Russia?

No. Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Belarus and Iran are not on OpenAI’s list (checked 21 October 2026).

Do I get my ChatGPT Plus money back?

OpenAI’s Terms say payments are non-refundable except where required by law. A banned subscription billed by OpenAI stops renewing and may stay active, though unusable, until the period ends.

Can my team share one ChatGPT account?

No. The Terms forbid sharing your login or making your account available to anyone else, and OpenAI lists inappropriate account sharing as a reason for deactivation. Give each person their own account.

What if my account was hacked?

OpenAI may suspend it temporarily to protect you. Change your password, rotate your API keys and appeal with the dates and any charges you don’t recognize.
