How to use Grok from China: supported regions, proxy setup, and what a proxy can and cannot do

Many people search "how to use Grok from China", but they are really asking two things: can I use it where I am, and how should I set up the network. xAI decides the first one and a proxy cannot change it. The second one is what this guide covers.

What a proxy does not change

This guide covers network settings only. It does not cover how to make a service work in a place where it is not offered. Grok is a product of xAI. xAI's developer documentation says its consumer website and apps are grok.com and the iOS and Android apps. The documentation points readers to xAI's legal resources page (x.ai/legal) for the Enterprise Terms of Service and the Data Processing Addendum. Read xAI's terms there, and read the prompts inside the app, to learn what applies to you.

A proxy only changes the network address the service sees. It does not change xAI's terms of service. It does not change whether a region is served. It does not make any decision about your account. The platform decides all of those. The "regions" page in xAI's developer documentation is about API endpoints: the global endpoint api.x.ai, and us.api.x.ai for when you need requests processed in the United States. That is where a request is processed. It is not a list of who may use the service.

When we read xAI's public developer documentation, we did not find a page that lists the countries and regions where Grok is available. So please do not treat any third-party article as a list. Look at xAI's legal resources page and at the prompts you see when you open Grok.

Confirm the exit region before you change settings

If Grok says your region is unavailable, or the page will not open, first work out which case you are in. In the first case, your location is simply not in the service area, and no network setting can change the result. In the second case, you are inside the service area, but your computer or phone has a proxy, a company network or an old setting that you do not know about, and the service sees an address from another region. Network settings can fix only the second case.

The check is simple. In the same device and the same browser, open https://ipinfo.io/json and look at two fields, country and org. They tell you which country the service sees you in and which network you belong to. To read these fields, see How to check a proxy IP's location.

Set a proxy for the browser in a supported region

If you are in a region where Grok is offered and you need a fixed network exit, for example to keep the browser on the same address during a trip, the easiest way is to set the proxy for the browser only, not for the whole system. To set a proxy with a browser extension, you need the proxy's address, port, username and password. What each of the four means is explained in How to fill in the proxy address, port and login. After you set it, open https://ipinfo.io/json again and check that country is what you expect, then open grok.com.

Which type of IP to choose depends on how you use it. If you need the same address for a long time and do not want it to change midway, static residential ISP is the better fit: the IP is fixed during the rental and does not rotate, and a rental of 30 days or more is dedicated. For details, see the static residential proxy page.

Phone app and API

xAI's documentation says the consumer apps are offered on iOS and on Android, and subscriptions are handled separately on the web, in the App Store and in Google Play. For how to set a proxy on a phone and what its limits are, see the iPhone proxy setup guide and the Android proxy setup guide.

API calls are a different matter, because they are requests sent by a program. The curl documentation says you can use the -x option, or environment variables such as http_proxy and HTTPS_PROXY, to send requests through a proxy. Use the command below to check the exit first, then have your program use the same proxy.

Phone app and API: example

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json

Replace USERNAME, PASSWORD, HOST and PORT with your proxy details. If the password contains special characters, percent-encode them first.

How to verify

Verification has two steps. First, use the command above or open https://ipinfo.io/json in the browser, and confirm that country and org are what you expect. Second, open Grok. If ipinfo shows the right region and Grok still says it is unavailable, the problem is not in the network settings. Go back to xAI's terms and prompts instead of trying more proxies.

Causes of common problems

• 407 Proxy Authentication Required. The proxy rejected the username or password. Copy them again and check how special characters are encoded. See What to do when proxy authentication fails. • ipinfo opens but Grok does not. This is usually about region and account, not about whether the proxy is connected. • The proxy is set in the browser but has no effect in the app. A browser extension only works in the browser. The app has to be handled through the phone's own proxy settings.

How to do it with Proxy302

Proxy302 proxies only need an address, a port, a username and a password. Dynamic residential is billed by traffic, and the exit country is set when you generate the proxy; HTTP is on port 2222 of proxy.proxy302.com and SOCKS5 is on port 3333. A static ISP IP is fixed for the whole rental and does not rotate, and a rental of 30 days or more is dedicated. The table below shows the exits in 7 countries at our latest hourly check; the probe requests ChatGPT, which is only an example target. For details, see the dynamic residential page and the proxy location check guide.

Hourly check of the Proxy302 probe, 28 October 2026, 14:56 UTC: one request to ChatGPT per country through a dynamic residential exit, using the public Proxy302 entry. Only the first three octets of an IP are public. One sample per country, not an average; later checks will differ.

How to do it with Proxy302: steps

  1. Step 1

Open the rotating residential page, choose the line, and keep Protocol on HTTP or choose SOCKS5, then click Review cost and generate.

  2. Step 2

Open My assets (the console page that holds everything you bought) and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The Connect page shows a ready example with your own endpoint.

  3. Step 3

Enter the details in the browser or tool you are setting up.

  4. Step 4

Confirm the exit with https://ipinfo.io/json through the proxy.

  5. Step 5

From mainland China, start the helper tool from the Connect page first and keep it open while you use the proxy.

Prices and limits

The Budget line costs US$1.50 per GB, US$1.35 per GB in a 100 GB package and US$1.20 per GB at 300 GB. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is 1 GB. Which exit locations are available changes daily.

FAQ

Can I use Grok if I use a proxy?

Do not read it that way. A proxy only changes the network address the service sees. It does not change the terms of service, and it does not make a region that is not served become available.

What is us.api.x.ai in the xAI documentation?

It is xAI's US regional endpoint. xAI's documentation says to use it when you need API request handling and model inference to happen in the United States. The global endpoint is api.x.ai. This tells you where a request is processed, not who may use the service.

How do I set a proxy for the Grok app on a phone?

See the iPhone and Android proxy setup guides for the method and the limits. A setting made in a browser extension does not apply to the app.

Should I choose a dynamic or a static IP?

If you need the same exit address for a long time, choose static residential ISP. If you only check now and then or use it by traffic, choose dynamic residential.
