Best SOCKS5 Proxies: How to Choose One and Test It With curl

Before you pick a SOCKS5 proxy service, it helps to know what the protocol does and what it leaves to you. This guide is a checklist for choosing, with a curl test you can run on any proxy.

What SOCKS5 is

SOCKS5 is defined in RFC 1928. The RFC describes a framework that lets client-server applications over TCP and UDP use the services of a firewall, sitting between the application layer and the transport layer. In practice the client opens a connection to the SOCKS server, agrees an authentication method, then sends a request naming the destination, and the server makes the connection for it.

The request can be CONNECT, BIND or UDP ASSOCIATE, and the destination can be an IPv4 address, an IPv6 address or a domain name. The authentication methods defined include no authentication, GSSAPI and username/password; the username/password method is specified in RFC 1929.

How it differs from an HTTP proxy

An HTTP proxy speaks HTTP. For an https:// address the client asks it to open a tunnel with the CONNECT method, and after that the proxy cannot read or change the traffic, as the curl documentation explains. A SOCKS5 proxy does not interpret the application protocol at all: it just connects to the destination and relays the bytes. That is why a tool that is not a web browser can use it, as long as the tool has a SOCKS5 proxy setting.

Which tools need SOCKS5

Choose SOCKS5 when your tool offers a SOCKS5 proxy field, when the traffic is not plain web requests, or when you want names resolved at the proxy. Choose HTTP when the tool only has an HTTP proxy field. Look at the tool's own documentation for the proxy types it supports and whether it accepts a username and password for SOCKS5, because not every tool does. For example, FoxyProxy's help says SOCKS5 login works in Firefox only; see the FoxyProxy setup guide.

socks5 or socks5h

The curl documentation separates two forms. With socks5://, curl resolves the host name itself and sends the proxy an address. With socks5h://, curl sends the host name to the proxy, so the host name is not resolved locally. Choose socks5h when you want the proxy to resolve names. Other tools use similar scheme names, so check their documentation.

What to check when buying

  1. Check 1

SOCKS5 is offered on the exact plan you will buy, not only on another line of the same service.

  2. Check 2

Whether the protocol is chosen per account, per proxy or per IP, and whether you can change it later.

  3. Check 3

The host name and the SOCKS5 port, and whether the proxy asks for a username and password.

  4. Check 4

That your tool supports a SOCKS5 login. RFC 1929 describes the username/password exchange, but your tool must implement it.

  5. Check 5

If you need UDP, ask directly. The protocol defines UDP ASSOCIATE, but whether a service lets UDP through is up to the service.

  6. Check 6

A small first purchase so that you can run the test below.

Test with curl

Run this with the values from the service, then read the result.

Test with curl: example

curl -x socks5h://proxy-host:PORT -U USERNAME:PASSWORD https://ipinfo.io/json

Replace proxy-host, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The ip and country fields should belong to the proxy, not to your own connection.

Test with curl, continued

For an HTTP proxy, the curl documentation says a proxy which needs authentication returns status 407 when you give no credentials or wrong ones. A SOCKS5 proxy has no HTTP status: a rejected login ends the handshake and curl usually reports a proxy handshake error (exit code 97). In both cases -U sets the username and password. Compare the country with the one you ordered, and read the proxy location guide for the fields.

What SOCKS5 does not do

SOCKS5 does not encrypt your traffic by itself. RFC 1928 says the security of the traversal depends on the authentication and encapsulation methods in use, and RFC 1929 says the username and password are sent in cleartext, so that method is not recommended where sniffing is possible. Traffic that is HTTPS keeps its own TLS protection through the proxy, but a plain http:// connection is not protected. A SOCKS5 proxy also does not change a website's rules; it only changes the network address the site sees.

SOCKS5 at Proxy302

Rotating residential, static ISP and datacenter all offer HTTP or SOCKS5. The protocol is chosen when you generate or buy the proxy, and each static IP is issued with one protocol; My assets has no protocol switch. On proxy.proxy302.com the SOCKS5 port is 3333 and HTTP is 2222. The SOCKS5 port asks for a username and password. SOCKS5 on datacenter IPs has been open to all customers since 17 October 2026.

Rotating residential traffic starts at US$1.50 per GB with a 1 GB minimum. A static ISP IP costs US$0.50 for one day and a datacenter IP US$0.25 for one day, billed per IP and lease term, and a static IP stays fixed for the whole lease term without rotating. There is no free trial. See the SOCKS5 proxies page for the setup.

How to do it with Proxy302

Whichever line you choose, a Proxy302 SOCKS5 proxy comes with a host, a port, a username and a password, so the curl test above works on it unchanged. The table shows exits in 7 countries from our latest hourly check; the probe sends its request to ChatGPT, which is only an example target of a network check. A proxy does not change ChatGPT's terms, and OpenAI's list of supported countries still applies. Read the proxy address, port and login guide, the rotating residential page or the datacenter page for the details of each line.

Hourly check of the Proxy302 probe, 25 October 2026, 08:29 UTC: one request to ChatGPT per country through a dynamic residential exit, using the public Proxy302 entry. Only the first three octets of an IP are public. One sample per country, not an average; later checks will differ.

How to do it with Proxy302: steps

  1. Step 1

Open the rotating residential page, choose the line, and keep Protocol on HTTP or choose SOCKS5, then click Review cost and generate.

  2. Step 2

Open My assets (the console page that holds everything you bought) and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The Connect page shows a ready example with your own endpoint.

  3. Step 3

Enter the details in the browser or tool you are setting up.

  4. Step 4

Confirm the exit with https://ipinfo.io/json through the proxy.

  5. Step 5

From mainland China, start the helper tool from the Connect page first and keep it open while you use the proxy.

Prices and limits

The Budget line costs US$1.50 per GB, US$1.35 per GB in a 100 GB package and US$1.20 per GB at 300 GB. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is 1 GB. Which exit locations are available changes daily.

FAQ

Is SOCKS5 better than an HTTP proxy?

Neither is better in general. SOCKS5 suits tools that have a SOCKS5 setting or send traffic other than plain web requests. An HTTP proxy suits tools that only have an HTTP field.

What is the difference between socks5 and socks5h?

With socks5 the client resolves the host name. With socks5h the host name is sent to the proxy, which resolves it.

Does SOCKS5 encrypt my traffic?

No. Encryption comes from the protocol you run through it, such as HTTPS. The SOCKS5 username and password are sent in cleartext, according to RFC 1929.

Which port does Proxy302 use for SOCKS5?

Port 3333 on proxy.proxy302.com. HTTP is on port 2222.
