Amazon Japan vs Amazon US for Sellers: Fees, Fulfillment, Language and Rules

A neutral side-by-side of the two marketplaces, using only figures from Amazon's own pages and filings, checked on 4 November 2026.

What this page compares, and what it does not

Amazon Japan (amazon.co.jp) and Amazon US (amazon.com) are separate marketplaces with their own fees, languages and product rules. This guide sets Amazon's published figures for the two side by side and leaves the choice to you.

Every figure comes from Amazon's own pages, checked on 2026-11-04. Where we could not open an official page with a current figure, we left the figure out instead of guessing. Amazon changes fees and rules from time to time, so confirm in Seller Central before you decide.

Source: Amazon's Form 10-K for fiscal 2025, note on segment information, checked 2026-11-04. These are Amazon's net sales attributed to each country across all of its businesses there. Amazon says they are attributed "primarily based on country-focused online and physical stores or, for AWS purposes, the selling entity". So they include AWS and Amazon's own retail, and they are not sales on the seller marketplace alone. In 2025 the United States was 68.3% and Japan 4.3% of the consolidated total (our arithmetic). The figures show how Amazon's business is spread across countries; they do not tell you how many shoppers will buy your product in either store.

Amazon's investment in Japan

Amazon Japan's own site states that in the single year 2022 Amazon invested more than 1.2 trillion yen in Japan, counting both capital spending (fulfillment centers, delivery stations, data centers) and operating costs such as salaries. We found no equally official figure for the US to set beside it, so we do not compare the two.

Sources: Amazon Japan and Amazon US pricing pages, checked 2026-11-04. Amounts are in each store's currency and we do not convert them, because Amazon's pages give no exchange rate. The Japan rates are those after the 1 April 2026 change; see the Amazon Japan fees guide for that change and for FBA, storage and tax. The rate that applies depends on the price band and on the category Amazon assigns to the product, which may differ from the category shoppers see.

Fulfillment by Amazon

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is offered in both stores: you send stock to Amazon's warehouses, and Amazon stores it, packs and ships the orders and handles returns and customer service for them. Amazon's Japan page says orders shipped through FBA can reach buyers the same day or the next day.

For Japan, Amazon's pricing page lists a per-item fulfillment fee by size and price. For example, a standard-size item up to 35 x 30 x 3.3 cm and 1 kg costs ¥318 if its price is above ¥1,000 and ¥252 if it is ¥1,000 or less, tax included. The full Japan table and the storage fees are in the Amazon Japan fees guide.

We do not quote US per-item FBA fees here, because the US pricing page we opened today did not carry a current table. Use the Revenue Calculator on sell.amazon.com for your own product.

Language and customer contact

For Japan, Amazon Global Selling lists these help programs: free translation and upload of your existing listings, a paid Japanese-language customer-service service, and a tool to copy listings from other marketplaces and translate them. When you use FBA, Amazon handles delivery questions from buyers in the local language. If you fulfill orders yourself, Amazon requires you to handle buyer contact yourself, and its page says machine translation can help at first and a translation provider is better as you grow.

If you ship returns yourself from outside Japan, Amazon requires you to offer one of these: a return address inside Japan, a prepaid return label, or a refund without a return.

Product rules and account rules

Amazon's Japan page says electrical products need Japan's PSE review (the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law), and that approval to sell a restricted category in one country does not carry over: you may need to apply again in Japan with the documents it asks for. We could not open the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) pages today, so this guide does not give the number of items covered by PSE; check the METI list for your product.

Amazon's rule is one seller account for each marketplace; holding several accounts on the same marketplace is not allowed. If you already have a US or European account, Amazon says you can switch to the Japan marketplace from the same account, and the combined monthly fee above applies.

On the tax side, Japan has consumption tax and a qualified-invoice system (適格請求書, an invoice showing the issuer's registration number and tax amounts). See the Amazon Japan fees guide.

Questions to settle before you choose

Which language can you handle for buyer messages and returns? Do your products need PSE review or other approval in Japan? Which referral rate applies to your category and price in each store? Do you already hold a US account, and would adding Japan raise your monthly fee? Can you support FBA in the country, or will you ship orders yourself?

Amazon Global Selling lets one registration cover several marketplaces, and the combined monthly fee above applies when you open two or more.

Common questions

Which store sells more?

Amazon's 10-K reports net sales attributed to the United States of US$489.7 billion in 2025 and to Japan of US$30.7 billion. These cover all of Amazon's business in each country, AWS included, so they are not a measure of the seller marketplaces and not a forecast for your product.

Can I use my US account to sell in Japan?

Amazon's Japan page says yes: you can switch to the Japan marketplace from an existing US or European account, with no second registration, and the combined monthly fee of US$39.99 applies.

Is the referral fee higher in Japan or in the US?

It depends on the category and the price. Home & kitchen is 15.4% above ¥750 in Japan and 15% in the US; electronics are 8.4% above ¥750 in Japan and 8% for consumer electronics in the US. See the table above for more.

Do I need PSE approval to sell electronics in Japan?

Amazon says electrical products need Japan's PSE review. Check your product category on Seller Central and with METI.

Can I run both stores?

Yes. Amazon Global Selling supports selling in several marketplaces from one registration, and the rule of one seller account per marketplace still applies.

Logging in to Seller Central

If you run both stores, log in to each store from one fixed IP whose location stays the same, with a fixed browser profile, so you always know who logs in from where. An IP does not change Amazon's rules or the result of any review of your account. The Amazon Japan page covers the setup, and the guide on seller-account IPs covers what an IP can and cannot do.
