Amazon Japan Identity Verification: Documents, Steps and What If It Fails

Identity verification is the last step of opening an Amazon Japan seller account. This guide sets out what Amazon's own pages ask for and in what order, so you can prepare once and submit once. Every rule here comes from pages opened on 4 November 2026.

What identity verification is

Japanese pages call it 本人確認 (honnin kakunin), "confirming that you are you". Amazon checks that the person running the account matches the documents, and that the business is real. Amazon asks you to register as operator the person who actually runs the account and to submit that person's ID.

The Japan page says that after you provide the information, review takes about 3 business days. In registration step 5 you upload your documents, then photograph your face with your ID, or join or book a video call with an Amazon adviser. Amazon's Global Selling pages for China describe three methods in all: a face photo, a face video recorded in front of your webcam, and a video call with Amazon staff; which ones you see depends on your account.

Person in charge: addressDriving licence, utility bill, resident record (住民票), bank statement or credit card statementName and address must both appear. A licence must be valid; other documents must be issued within 180 days. A resident record showing a My Number is not accepted.

A power of attorney needs a signature or company seal.
Bank accountPassbook details page or bank statementIt must show the company name or the operator's name, the bank name and the account number. A statement must be issued within 180 days.

Amazon's page lists these for a company. A sole proprietor needs fewer: name and address, shop name, card and bank details, plus a driving licence or passport, an address document and a bank confirmation document. The page lists a statement, credit card statement or online banking record issued within 180 days as proof of address.

File rules and who submits

Amazon asks for a smartphone photo or a scan of the original, in colour, not a screenshot and not a black-and-white copy. Accepted formats are png, tiff, tif, jpg, jpeg and pdf. Keep special symbols such as $, & and # out of the file name. The registration page adds that all four corners should be visible, the text readable, and that you should sign the relevant documents.

The country of residence and the country that issued your documents must be the same: if you choose Japan, you submit a Japanese passport. Documents other than the passport must be in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish; otherwise submit a notarised translation into one of those languages.

For mainland China companies, Amazon's China page accepts only a colour scan of the paper business licence and not the electronic licence.

The steps, in order

  1. Submit the documents

Upload your ID, your statement and, for a company, the company documents in Seller Central.

  2. Confirm with a photo or a video

Choose the face photo or the face video and follow the on-screen instructions, using a working camera and a steady network. Amazon recommends that the legal representative does it, because that improves the chance of passing; if a business contact does it, they need their own ID and the legal representative's ID. You get up to 3 photo attempts or 2 video attempts; after that Amazon staff review what you recorded and may ask for another way of verifying. You can close the session at any time and go back to the choice page to start again.

Before continuing The attempt counts and the recommendation come from Amazon's China Global Selling page dated 26 June 2024.

  3. Video call, if Amazon asks for one

If Amazon cannot verify you from the photo or video, the screen shows a button for a video call and you also get an email. Staff may ask questions about how the business runs. Amazon asks the company's legal representative to attend; someone else needs the company's authorisation and must bring the originals of the legal representative's ID, a business document showing the representative's name, and their own ID. The company must not be revoked, closed or on the abnormal-operations list, and for mainland China the business licence must have more than 45 days left before it expires. If an assistant such as an interpreter joins, tell Amazon at the start, keep them on camera throughout, and let them help only with translation, devices and network setup, never with answering.

Before continuing Mainland China sellers also need a phone or tablet with Alipay, so that Amazon can confirm the employer through the housing fund or social security query; set that up before the call. Hong Kong: a body corporate brings both the certificate of incorporation and the business registration certificate, an individual or partnership brings the business registration certificate.

  4. Postcard, if asked

After identity verification Amazon may post a one-time password on a postcard to your registered address. Enter the real business address, down to the door number, because it cannot be changed once confirmed. The postcard should arrive within 5 to 8 business days; if it has not come after 7 days you can ask for it to be sent again, up to 3 times in all. Enter the code in the address verification field as soon as it arrives.

Before continuing This comes from Amazon's page dated October 2024 for sellers using a Chinese-language address.

  5. Read the result

Amazon emails the result. When the message says your account information has been verified, you can sign in to Seller Central and carry on.

If verification does not pass

Amazon's Japan page says that if your documents are incomplete, it will ask you to submit them again. If you do not pass, Amazon emails you. If you disagree with the result, click the "Selling Partner Support" link in that email and send an appeal to Amazon's Selling Partner Support. Amazon's pages do not give a way to guarantee a pass, so check each document against the table above before you submit.

The network side

Register, verify your identity and later log in to Seller Central from one stable connection whose exit location does not change, and do not switch exits in the middle of verification. Amazon's page also asks for a working camera and a steady network during the photo and video steps. An IP does not change Amazon's review or its rules: what is reviewed is your documents and your answers.

If you use Proxy302, a static ISP IP keeps the same address for the whole lease and Japan is listed in the order form (availability is shown on the order page). It costs US$0.50 for one day or US$7.99 for 30 days, and you choose HTTP or SOCKS5 for each IP when you buy it. To see where your current exit appears to be, use the IP location check guide.

Common questions

How long does review take?

Amazon Japan's page says about 3 business days after you provide the information.

Which IDs are not accepted?

The My Number card and the My Number driving licence. Amazon asks for a passport or a driving licence with your photo, inside its validity period.

How old can a statement be?

Issued within the last 180 days, for example a credit card statement, an online banking record or a passbook.

How many tries do I get for the photo and the video?

Amazon's China Global Selling page (26 June 2024) says up to 3 for the face photo or 2 for the face video. After that, staff review the details and may ask for other verification.

My documents are in Chinese. Is that allowed?

Documents other than the passport may be in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish. The passport must come from your country of residence.

Does the proxy or IP I use change the result?

No. An IP changes only the network address Amazon sees. It does not change Amazon's review or its rules.
