How to Set Up a Proxy in Telegram: SOCKS5 on Desktop, iPhone and Android

How to add a SOCKS5 proxy in Telegram: Desktop, iPhone and Android, the username and password fields, how to check the connection and how to turn the proxy off.

What a proxy does not change

This page is about network setup only. A proxy changes the route your Telegram traffic takes to reach Telegram. It does not change your account, Telegram's own rules and limits, or the laws that apply where you are.

Which proxy type to use

The Telegram documentation says its apps generally support two kinds of proxy, SOCKS5 and MTProto, and that certain apps might also support HTTP. SOCKS5 needs a server and a port and may have an optional username and password. MTProto always needs a secret key, and Proxy302 does not issue MTProto proxies. So for a Proxy302 proxy choose SOCKS5, bought with the SOCKS5 protocol: a static IP is issued with one protocol only, so an IP bought as HTTP cannot be switched to SOCKS5 later. The Telegram documentation does not say which apps accept HTTP, so do not count on it in the phone apps; the SOCKS5 proxies page explains the protocol.

What you need

Four values from My assets: server (the host), port, username and password. For SOCKS5 the port is 3333. If you need a proxy mainly to run Telegram accounts or bots, the Telegram proxy page explains which product fits and why each account should have its own IP.

The values to enter

Type: SOCKS5
Server: HOST
Port: 3333
Username: USERNAME
Password: PASSWORD

Replace HOST, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets. Copy them instead of typing the password.

Telegram Desktop (Windows, Linux)

  1. Open the connection settings

Go to Settings > Advanced > Connection type. This path is given in the Telegram documentation.

  2. Choose to use your own proxy and add one

In the connection window pick the option for a custom proxy and add a new proxy. The Telegram documentation does not describe this window, and the wording can differ between versions.

  3. Fill in the form

Choose SOCKS5, then enter the server, port 3333, the username and the password from the list above.

  4. Save and make it active

Save the proxy and make sure it is the one selected. Telegram then connects through it.

iPhone and Android

  1. Open the proxy list

iPhone: Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy. Android: Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy Settings. The Telegram documentation says the entry is at the bottom of the page.

  2. Add a proxy

Tap Add Proxy and choose SOCKS5.

  3. Fill in the fields

Enter the server, port 3333, the username and the password.

  4. Save and select it

Save, then make sure the proxy is switched on and selected in the list. On Telegram for macOS the Telegram documentation names the path Settings > Data and Storage > Use Proxy; the screen was not described there.

How to check that it is connected

  1. Look at the saved proxy

The Telegram documentation does not describe the status shown next to a proxy. In the app the saved proxy is usually listed with a status, and the chat list should load. If the top of the screen stays on Connecting, the proxy is not working.

  2. Test the proxy outside Telegram

Run the command below in a terminal. It shows the IP, country and network that the proxy gives. If this works and Telegram does not, the problem is in the Telegram form; if it does not work, the details or the lease are wrong. The guide on how to check your proxy IP explains the fields.

  3. Remember what this tests

The curl command tests the proxy, not Telegram itself. The status of the proxy inside the app is the final check.

How to check that it is connected: example

curl --proxy socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:3333 https://ipinfo.io/json

socks5h makes the proxy look up the site name, as in the curl documentation. Replace HOST, USERNAME and PASSWORD.

Turn the proxy off

On Desktop go back to Settings > Advanced > Connection type and switch to the option that does not use a proxy. On a phone open the proxy list again and switch the proxy off, or delete it. The Telegram documentation does not describe this step, and the names of the switches can differ between versions. Telegram then connects directly.

Common errors

Connecting stays on the screen

Check Is the type SOCKS5? Do the server, port, username and password match My assets exactly?

Fix Enter the four values again, save, and select the proxy.

The proxy shows as unavailable on the phone

Check Was the IP bought with the HTTP protocol?

Fix Use an IP bought as SOCKS5. HTTP is not described for the phone apps in the Telegram documentation.

It worked yesterday and now it does not

Check Has the lease of the IP ended?

Fix Check the date in My assets and renew the IP.

The curl check works but Telegram does not

Check Is a different proxy selected in Telegram, or a typo in the password?

Fix Copy the password again instead of typing it.

The password has special characters

Check The form takes the password as it is, with no encoding.

Fix Enter it unchanged in the app. Encode special characters only in the curl address (@ as %40, : as %3A).

How to do it with Proxy302

A static ISP IP with the SOCKS5 protocol fits Telegram: the IP is fixed for the whole lease and does not rotate, and the username and password go straight into Telegram's own proxy form. One IP per account is the usual setup. Choose the country and number of IPs on the order page; the Telegram proxy page opens it with SOCKS5 already selected.

How to do it with Proxy302: steps

  1. Step 1

Open the static ISP page, choose the country, set Protocol to SOCKS5, choose the term and the quantity, then review the cost and generate.

  2. Step 2

Open My assets and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The Connect page shows a ready example with your own details. SOCKS5 uses port 3333.

  3. Step 3

Enter the values in Telegram as shown above.

  4. Step 4

Check that the chats load, and test the exit with the curl command.

  5. Step 5

From mainland China, open the Helper from the Connect page, click 「一键加速」 (One-click boost) and keep it open while you use the proxy.

Prices and limits

A static ISP IP costs US$0.50 for one day and US$7.99 for 30 days, about US$0.27 per day, the same in every country. Availability by country changes daily and is shown on the order page. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is one IP for one day.

FAQ

Which protocol should I choose for Telegram, HTTP or SOCKS5?

SOCKS5. The Telegram documentation names SOCKS5 and MTProto as the main types and only says that certain apps might support HTTP.

Does Telegram need a username and password for the proxy?

For SOCKS5 they are optional in Telegram. A Proxy302 proxy always has them, so fill them in.

Can I use an MTProto proxy from Proxy302?

No. Proxy302 issues HTTP and SOCKS5 proxies, and MTProto needs a secret key that we do not issue.

Does the proxy change my Telegram account?

No. It changes only the network route.
