How to Add a Proxy to Key Collector: Where to Type It and How to Test It

How to add a proxy to Key Collector: where the proxy table is, what goes into the Address, Port, Login and Password columns, how many threads per IP the help recommends, how to test a proxy by hand, and what Yandex says about its official Wordstat API. Step by step, in plain words.

A few words explained

Key Collector is a program for collecting keywords; it sends the requests to services such as Yandex Wordstat itself. A proxy is another computer that sends those requests for it, so the service sees the proxy's address instead of yours.

A thread is one parallel worker of the program. HOST and PORT are the proxy's address and the number of its door; USERNAME and PASSWORD prove that you may use it.

What this guide covers

Only the network side: where to put a proxy and how to test it. Yandex's own rules and service limits apply whatever proxy you use; the end of the guide also covers the official route, the Wordstat API.

Where the settings are

  1. Open the section

In the Settings menu choose Network (in the Russian interface, Настройки → Сеть).

  2. Turn on the switch

Turn on Use proxy servers. When it is off, proxies are normally not used, except static proxies that are explicitly tied to Yandex accounts: those work with their accounts whatever the Network tab says.

  3. Look at the nearby options

The same tab has an option to drop a proxy from the local queue after several errors in a row, a network wait timeout and Usage restrictions, which lets you allow or forbid proxies from different groups for particular tasks.

How to add proxies to the table

  1. Click the add-list button

It is the "+" icon above the proxy table. You can type one proxy per line and press Enter; each becomes its own row. The help says to type them in one of the offered formats, but the page does not list the formats, so follow the hint in the window.

  2. Check the columns

The proxy's IP address goes into Address and the port into Port. If the proxy needs a password, fill in Login and Password; otherwise leave them empty.

  3. Tick the proxies

Only ticked (active) proxies work. The red or green row colour is just a visual indicator. When a task starts, the program offers the list of allowed and ticked proxies.

HTTP or SOCKS5

The help pages I read do not name the supported protocols and do not show a protocol field. Start with HTTP, the simplest option with a username and password at Proxy302. If the program does not accept it, read the hint in the add window and ask Key Collector support.

Threads, delays and accounts

The Wordstat collection settings page says: "we recommend not using more than 1 thread per 1 IP address". The thread count is a total, not per account, and it cannot be higher than the number of active Yandex accounts. Delays are set per thread between requests; the help warns about extra risks with very small delays. So it is convenient to get proxies in line with your number of threads or accounts.

How to test a proxy by hand

  1. Close everything else

Close all programs and browser tabs so a system proxy cannot interfere with the test.

  2. Note your IP

Open an IP-checking service, for example internet.yandex.ru, and note your current address.

  3. Set the proxy in a browser

Enter the address and port you are testing in the browser's network settings. The way depends on the browser.

  4. Check the IP again

If the proxy's address is shown, it is right. A different address means the proxy was entered wrongly; a network error means the proxy does not work or something blocks it: contact the proxy provider.

  5. Try the kind of collection you need

Run a test query in Yandex or collect a frequency in Wordstat. If it works by hand but not in the program, contact Key Collector support.

  6. Remove the proxy from the browser

Clear the address and port, turn the proxy off and check the IP once more: your usual address should show.

Why not automatic checkers

The Key Collector help does not recommend checking proxies with programs or services: they check only roughly, sometimes without even trying to load a page through the proxy. Access can be closed on your computer specifically, and a proxy may not fit a particular kind of statistics or account.

Check the proxy outside the program: example

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json

Replace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets. The answer shows the IP, country and network that websites see. This adds to the manual check from the help; it does not replace it.

The official Wordstat API

Yandex has a Wordstat API inside Search API. It works only in synchronous mode and offers four methods: GetTop (popular queries of the last 30 days), GetDynamics (frequency by month, week or day), GetRegionsDistribution (counts by region) and GetRegionsTree (the list of region codes). Requests need the role search-api.webSearch.user.

According to the documentation, statistics requests have quotas of 10 per second and 100 per hour, and at most 20 associations are returned. Quotas are called organisational limits that can be changed through technical support, while limits are technical and cannot be changed. The pages I read do not say whether the API data matches the web version.

Common errors

• 407. Key Collector help: it means the proxy was entered wrongly. The browser keeps asking for the username and password; recheck the details in the service, the browser and Key Collector. Copy them again from My assets.

• The site will not open or a network error. The page gives no separate advice about timeouts; the general logic is that either the details are wrong, or the proxy itself is, or something blocks it. Test the address and port with the curl command above.

• Collection stops at 2000 phrases. According to the help, the service returns up to 40 pages of 50 results, 2000 in total, and this is a basic technical limit of the service itself. Proxies do not change it.

• A proxy disappears from the queue. If dropping after several errors in a row is on, that proxy is not issued again until collection is restarted.

How to do it with Proxy302

A static ISP proxy fits when you want a separate fixed address per thread or account: the IP stays the same for the whole lease and you choose the protocol at purchase. You can buy several IPs at once, up to 100 in one order. The product is described on the static residential proxies page.

How to do it with Proxy302: steps

  1. Step 1

Open the static ISP page, choose the country, set Protocol to HTTP, choose the term and the quantity (as many as your threads or accounts), then review the cost and generate.

  2. Step 2

Open My assets and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD of each IP. HTTP uses port 2222 on proxy.proxy302.com. The Connect page shows a ready example.

  3. Step 3

In Key Collector open Settings, Network, add the proxies as a list as described above and tick them.

  4. Step 4

Test each proxy by hand with the steps from the help or with the curl command above and read the country and org fields.

  5. Step 5

From mainland China, start the helper tool from the Connect page first and keep it open while you use the proxy.

Prices and limits

A static ISP IP costs US$0.50 for one day and US$7.99 for 30 days, about US$0.27 per day, the same in every country. Availability by country changes daily and is shown on the order page. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is one IP for one day.
