Cursor proxy
Cursor proxy settings on a fixed static ISP IP: http.proxy, HTTP/1.1 compatibility mode and a US exit — the region Cursor uses to decide which models you see.
View options and pricingHow to set up a proxy in Windsurf: where the Http: Proxy field is, three ways to give the username and password, the separate fields for remote development, how to check, and what a proxy does not change.
This article is about network setup, not about whether a service is available. Windsurf's documentation does not describe regional availability of its models or its terms in the pages used here, so read the current terms of the service and of the model providers yourself. A proxy changes only the network exit your traffic leaves from. It does not make a service available where it is not, and it does not change the service terms, the plan limits or the rules of the model providers.
Windsurf's documentation now lives at docs.devin.ai/desktop and calls the editor Devin Desktop Editor; the old docs.windsurf.com address redirects there. The names in the settings follow that: you will see Devin Settings, not Windsurf Settings. Per the documentation, open the top-right dropdown and choose Devin Settings, or open the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P) and run Open Devin User Settings, then type proxy in the settings search bar.
There are two local options. Detect proxy is a toggle that reuses a proxy already set in your system network settings or a PAC file (a small file that tells the computer which proxy to use); turn it on and restart the editor, and if problems follow, turn it off and use the manual setting. Http: Proxy is the manual one: type the proxy address with protocol and port, such as http://proxy.company.com:8080. Close the settings page and restart the editor afterwards.
The documentation shows the field by its label Http: Proxy and does not print its key in settings.json. Only the authorization key is printed there, as http.proxyAuthorization. Because the editor is based on VS Code, the manual field is most likely stored as http.proxy, but treat that as unconfirmed until the check below passes.
http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORTThe Http: Proxy field takes this address. Replace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets.
The Windsurf documentation says the editor has no separate username and password fields and lists three ways. The first, which it recommends, is to leave the credentials out of the address and type them into the proxy login dialog when the editor asks; tick Remember my credentials to store them encrypted on your machine. The second is to put them in the address, as in http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT; the documentation warns that characters such as @, : or / may not be parsed correctly, so the dialog is safer. The third is the Http: Proxy Authorization field: click Edit in settings.json and set the header value that your proxy provider gives you.
The documentation also warns that values in Http: Proxy and Http: Proxy Authorization are stored in plain text in settings.json, so they can leak through backups or shared settings files. Do not commit that file to a repository.
If you do put the credentials in the address, percent-encode special characters: @ becomes %40, : becomes %3A, / becomes %2F, # becomes %23 and % becomes %25.
The Windsurf documentation does not say which proxy types it supports and does not mention SOCKS5. The VS Code documentation says proxies with authentication are supported (Basic, Digest, NTLM and Negotiate) while authentication for SOCKS5 is not implemented yet. So for a proxy with a username and password, choose HTTP.
Remote development has its own fields, separate from the local ones. Under User → Extensions find Remote › Devin SSH: Http Proxy and Remote › Devin SSH: Https Proxy and enter the proxy address, usually with protocol and port. The documentation says some setups need both the local and the remote values. After changing them, close the remote window and reconnect, or restart the dev container.
Look at the editor itself. The Windsurf documentation gives no test command; for a failed operation it says to reload the editor or Cascade (its AI chat) and try again. Signs of a working connection are that the editor and Cascade load, errors such as Failed to connect stop appearing, and sign-in succeeds.
Test the proxy from a terminal with the command below. It shows the IP, country and network that websites see. The guide on how to check your proxy's IP, country and ISP explains how to read the ip, country, city and org fields.
If a firewall or VPN filters your network, allow the domains from the Windsurf troubleshooting page. The page lists .codeiumdata.com, update.windsurf.com, .windsurf.com, .codeium.com, .googleapis.com and apis.google.com (used for sign-in), and static.devin.ai.
curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/jsonReplace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets.
• 407 Proxy Authentication Required. The proxy rejected the username or password. Use the login dialog instead of typing them into the address, copy the details from My assets, and check the percent-encoding if you keep them in the address.
• The editor stays blank or shows Failed to connect. The proxy address, port or protocol is wrong, or the IP lease has ended. Test it with the curl command above.
• Nothing changed after you saved the setting. The documentation says to close the settings page and restart the editor, and to reconnect remote windows.
• Certificate errors. The Windsurf pages used here do not cover certificates. The VS Code documentation names adding the proxy's certificate to the operating system's trusted certificates as the preferred option and calls turning certificate checks off dangerous.
A static ISP proxy fits when you need one permanent address: the IP is fixed for the whole lease and does not change, and you choose HTTP at purchase. Windsurf has no ready preset on the order page, so the link below opens the static ISP page for AI tools. The Cursor proxy settings page explains the same product in the context of a similar editor.
Open the static ISP page, choose the country, set Protocol to HTTP, choose the term and the quantity, then review the cost and generate.
Open My assets and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The Connect page shows a ready example with your own details. HTTP uses port 2222.
Paste the HTTP address into the Http: Proxy field (or the address without credentials, then enter the username and password in the login dialog), then restart Windsurf.
Check that the editor loads and signs in, and check the exit with the curl request.
A static ISP IP costs US$0.50 for one day and US$7.99 for 30 days, about US$0.27 per day, the same in every country. Availability by country changes daily and is shown on the order page. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is one IP for one day.
HTTP. The Windsurf documentation does not mention SOCKS5, and the VS Code documentation says authentication for SOCKS5 is not implemented yet.
The documentation recommends leaving them out of the address and typing them into the login dialog the editor shows. You can also put them in the address or set the Http: Proxy Authorization header.
The documentation pages used here call the editor Devin Desktop Editor and the settings Devin Settings. The proxy field is the same one described in this guide.
No. A proxy changes only the network exit. Service terms and availability stay as they are.
