How to Set Up a Proxy in Cursor: http.proxy, HTTP/1.1 and a Check

How to set up a proxy in Cursor: the http.proxy setting, an address with a username and password, HTTP/1.1 mode and a check with Run Diagnostics, and what a proxy does not change.

What a proxy does not change

This article is about network setup, not about whether a service is available. The Regions section of the Cursor documentation says some model providers restrict access by location: models that are not available in your region do not appear in Cursor, and if a provider blocks a region, calls can fail even with your own key. Cursor's Terms of Service (version of 3 September 2026, section 17.5) require you to follow applicable trade law, including sanctions and export controls. A proxy does not make Cursor available where it is not, and it does not change those terms.

Where to set the proxy

The Cursor documentation does not describe the http.proxy setting. It is a standard VS Code setting, and the Cursor proxy settings page uses it. Because the documentation does not describe it, do not treat it as working until the check below confirms it. To add it, open the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P), choose Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON), add the block shown here, then close Cursor completely and open it again.

Where to set the proxy: example

{
  "http.proxy": "http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT",
  "http.proxySupport": "override"
}

Replace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets.

Username and password in the address

If the username or password contains special characters, percent-encode them in the address: @ becomes %40, : becomes %3A, / becomes %2F, # becomes %23 and % becomes %25. Without this the address is parsed wrongly and the proxy answers with an authentication error. The easiest way to avoid typos is to copy the details from My assets instead of typing them.

HTTP or SOCKS5

The VS Code documentation says proxies with authentication are supported (Basic, Digest, NTLM and Negotiate), while authentication for SOCKS5 is not implemented yet. So for a proxy with a username and password, choose HTTP. The Cursor documentation says nothing about SOCKS5.

If chat and the agent hang: HTTP/1.1

Cursor uses HTTP/2 for streaming responses, and some proxies do not pass it through. According to the Cursor documentation, the fix is to set HTTP Compatibility Mode to HTTP/1.1 in Cursor Settings → Network and restart Cursor. The network configuration section of the documentation also says that when streaming has problems, Cursor switches by itself to HTTP/1.1 Server-Sent Events mode.

How to check that the proxy works

  1. Open Cursor Settings → Network and click Run Diagnostics

The tool checks the connection to Cursor's servers and shows problems that affect the AI features.

  2. Test the proxy itself from a terminal with the command below

It shows the IP, country and network that websites see. The guide on how to check your proxy's IP, country and ISP explains how to read the ip, country, city and org fields.

  3. If you have a firewall, allow the domains listed in the Cursor documentation

    *.cursor.sh, *.cursor-cdn.com and *.cursorapi.com.

How to check that the proxy works: example

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json

Replace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets.

Common errors

• 407 Proxy Authentication Required. The proxy rejected the username or password. Copy the details again instead of typing the password, and check the percent-encoding.

• Certificate errors. These can happen only with a proxy that replaces certificates. The VS Code documentation names adding the proxy's certificate to the operating system's trusted certificates as the preferred option. Turning certificate checks off is not advised: the documentation calls that approach dangerous.

• Timeouts. The proxy does not answer on the port, or the IP lease has ended. Check it with the curl command above.

• A streaming response hangs. Switch HTTP Compatibility Mode to HTTP/1.1.

How to do it with Proxy302

A static ISP proxy fits when you need one permanent address: the IP is yours for the whole lease and does not change, and you choose HTTP at purchase. The Cursor proxy settings page has the details and a ready preset, and the product itself is described on the static residential proxies page. The table below is our latest hourly check of Cursor through exits in seven countries, with the network of each exit and the response time of the site.

Hourly check of the Proxy302 probe, 22 October 2026, 14:18 UTC: one request to Cursor per country through a dynamic residential exit, using the public Proxy302 entry. Only the first three octets of an IP are public. One sample per country, not an average; later checks will differ.

How to do it with Proxy302: steps

  1. Step 1

Open the static ISP page, choose the country, set Protocol to HTTP, choose the term and the quantity, then review the cost and generate.

  2. Step 2

Open My assets and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The Connect page shows a ready example with your own details. HTTP uses port 2222.

  3. Step 3

Put the values into http.proxy as shown above and restart Cursor.

  4. Step 4

Check the exit with the curl request and with Run Diagnostics.

Prices and limits

A static ISP IP costs US$0.50 for one day and US$7.99 for 30 days, about US$0.27 per day, the same in every country. Availability by country changes daily and is shown on the order page. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is one IP for one day.

FAQ

Which protocol should I choose for Cursor, HTTP or SOCKS5?

HTTP. The VS Code documentation says authentication for SOCKS5 is not implemented yet, so for a proxy with a username and password use HTTP.

What should I do if Cursor shows a 407 error?

The proxy rejected the username or password. Copy the details again from My assets and percent-encode any special characters.

What does HTTP Compatibility Mode mean?

It is a switch in Cursor Settings → Network. HTTP/1.1 mode is needed when the proxy does not pass HTTP/2, which Cursor uses for streaming responses.

Will a proxy make Cursor available in my country?

No. A proxy changes only the network exit. The regional restrictions of model providers and Cursor's Terms of Service still apply.
