How to Set Up a Proxy in JetBrains IDEs: HTTP Proxy, Login and Check Connection

How to set up a proxy in JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm: where the HTTP Proxy page is, what to type into each field, how to use Check connection, and what the documents say about AI Assistant.

What a proxy does not change

This article is about network setup. The terms of an AI service you use in the IDE, such as AI Assistant or GitHub Copilot, and its regional availability stay the same. GitHub's trade-controls page says users in sanctioned regions must still follow U.S. trade rules, that access differs by region, and that it is the user's own responsibility to comply. A proxy does not make a service available where it is not and does not change its terms.

Three words explained

A proxy is another computer that sends your requests to the internet for you; websites then see the proxy's address instead of yours.

HOST and PORT are the address of that computer and the number of its door. USERNAME and PASSWORD (Login and Password in JetBrains) prove that you may use it.

An IDE is the program you write code in. IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm are JetBrains IDEs; they have the same Settings window, so these steps are the same in all of them.

Where to set the proxy

  1. Open Settings

On Windows click the File menu, then Settings. On macOS click the application name in the menu bar, then Settings. This is the path the GitHub Copilot documentation gives for JetBrains IDEs; the JetBrains page I read does not state the path. If your version looks different, type proxy in the search box at the top of the Settings window.

  2. Go to Appearance & Behavior → System Settings → HTTP Proxy

Click Appearance & Behavior in the list on the left, then System Settings, then HTTP Proxy.

  3. Choose Manual proxy configuration and select HTTP

The JetBrains page says the default mode is Auto-detect, which uses the system proxy settings or a PAC file. Choose Manual to enter your own proxy. Manual offers HTTP or SOCKS; for a proxy with a username and password choose HTTP.

  4. Type Host name and Port number

Copy HOST and PORT from My assets. Host name is the proxy's host name or IP address; Port number is its port.

  5. Tick Proxy authentication, then type Login and Password

Copy USERNAME and PASSWORD from My assets. The GitHub documentation warns that this stores the credentials as plain text in the editor's settings. The Remember checkbox decides whether the IDE keeps the password between sessions; if it is cleared, the IDE asks for the password each time it starts.

  6. Click Check connection

A window opens and asks for a web address. Type https://ipinfo.io/json and confirm. The JetBrains page does not describe the result message, so also confirm with the curl command below.

Hosts that should skip the proxy

The No proxy for field takes one or several host names or IP addresses that the IDE should reach without the proxy. Separate entries with commas; * works as a wildcard. Leave it empty unless you know a certain address must be reached directly, for example a server inside your company network.

HTTP or SOCKS

The JetBrains page offers HTTP or SOCKS under Manual. It says nothing about SOCKS authentication or the SOCKS version, and the GitHub Copilot page lists only HTTP. So for a proxy with a username and password, choose HTTP, and use Check connection to test anything else.

JetBrains AI Assistant and other plugins

AI Assistant is a JetBrains feature inside the IDE. The AI Assistant pages I read do not describe proxy configuration: they only mention that the JetBrains AI service addresses can be blocked at network level. The IDE page for HTTP Proxy does not say whether AI Assistant uses it either, and it lists plugin downloads, license checks and settings sync as examples of IDE traffic. So I cannot promise that AI Assistant follows this setting. Set the proxy, restart the IDE and try an AI Assistant request; if it fails while Check connection succeeds, look for an error message in the AI Assistant window and tell JetBrains support what you found.

For GitHub Copilot in a JetBrains IDE, the GitHub documentation uses the same HTTP Proxy page. See the Copilot page on Proxy302 for the exact steps and a ready preset.

The terminal and build tools

The JetBrains page I read does not say whether the HTTP Proxy page reaches Maven, Gradle or the terminal inside the IDE. Treat them as separate programs: give each its own proxy option or environment variable. The curl guide shows the variables curl reads; for other tools, read their documentation.

How to check that the proxy works

  1. Click Check connection and test https://ipinfo.io/json

This tests the IDE's own setting. If it fails, look at the fields and at the list of errors below.

  2. Test the proxy itself in a terminal with the command below

It shows the IP, country and network that websites see. If this works but Check connection fails, the problem is in the IDE fields. The guide on how to check your proxy's IP, country and ISP explains the answer.

  3. Restart the IDE and repeat what failed

For example a plugin download, a sign-in or an AI Assistant request.

Check the proxy outside the editor: example

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ipinfo.io/json

Replace HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD with the values from My assets. The answer shows the IP, country and network that websites see.

Common errors

• 407 Proxy Authentication Required or an authentication prompt that returns. The proxy rejected the login or password. Copy them again from My assets; on this page you type them in plain fields, so no percent-encoding is needed.

• Check connection fails with the right details. Click Clear Passwords, enter the password again, and try the curl command to see whether the proxy answers at all.

• The IDE keeps asking for the password. The Remember checkbox is cleared; tick it if you want the IDE to keep the password between sessions.

• Timeouts. The proxy does not answer on the port, or the IP lease has ended.

• Something works in the IDE but not in the terminal or in a build tool. They are separate programs: see the section above.

How to do it with Proxy302

A static ISP proxy fits when you want one permanent address for your editor: the IP stays the same for the whole lease and you choose the protocol at purchase. Choose HTTP: the JetBrains page does not describe SOCKS authentication. The product itself is described on the static residential proxies page.

How to do it with Proxy302: steps

  1. Step 1

Open the static ISP page, choose the country, set Protocol to HTTP, choose the term and the quantity, then review the cost and generate.

  2. Step 2

Open My assets and copy HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD. The Connect page shows a ready example with your own details. HTTP uses port 2222 on proxy.proxy302.com.

  3. Step 3

On the HTTP Proxy page choose Manual proxy configuration and HTTP, type HOST and PORT, tick Proxy authentication, type USERNAME and PASSWORD, and click Check connection.

  4. Step 4

Check the exit with the curl command above and read the country and org fields, as the proxy location guide explains.

Prices and limits

A static ISP IP costs US$0.50 for one day and US$7.99 for 30 days, about US$0.27 per day, the same in every country. Availability by country changes daily and is shown on the order page. There is no free trial, and the smallest purchase is one IP for one day.

FAQ

Do I choose HTTP or SOCKS in a JetBrains IDE?

HTTP, when the proxy has a username and password. The JetBrains page offers both but does not describe SOCKS authentication, so test anything else with Check connection.

Does AI Assistant use the IDE's proxy setting?

The official pages I read do not say. Set the proxy, restart the IDE and try an AI Assistant request; this guide does not promise it.

Where is the HTTP Proxy page?

Settings → Appearance & Behavior → System Settings → HTTP Proxy. On Windows Settings is under the File menu; on macOS it is under the application name menu.

Will a proxy make an AI service available in my country?

No. A proxy changes only the network exit. Regional availability and the service's terms still apply.
