Why Etherscan users need a proxy

Etherscan is blocked in mainland China: GreatFire's last six conclusive tests of etherscan.io all failed, and api.etherscan.io and sepolia.etherscan.io sit under the same blocked domain. Developers, analysts and support teams there need an exit abroad just to look up a transaction or a contract.

Many scripts broke for another reason. Etherscan deprecated API V1 on 15 August 2025: requests now go to api.etherscan.io/v2/api with a chainid parameter, and one key covers 60+ EVM chains. The free plan allows 3 calls per second and up to 100,000 calls a day, and chains such as Base, BNB Smart Chain and OP Mainnet need a paid plan.

Automate through the API, not the website. Etherscan's terms, updated on 13 August 2026, prohibit robots, spiders, crawlers and scrapers it doesn't provide, and automated data collection beyond search indexing. A proxy gives you a working route to Etherscan; it doesn't change those rules or raise your plan's limits.

Set up an Etherscan proxy in 4 steps

1. Open the research setup

   The “Configure Etherscan proxies” button opens Rotating Residential Proxies with the Web3 use case selected. Choose the Line — Premium is preselected, Budget costs less per GB — then under Traffic allowance click Add traffic and buy a package or enter Custom GB. Under Connection settings keep Exit mode at Choose region / sticky IP, pick the Region and Protocol, and click Review cost and generate.

   Expected result Your configuration lists By traffic, Web3, Choose region / sticky IP and your region.

2. Copy the connection details

   After payment the console opens My assets. Choose View credentials on the new proxy and copy the endpoint (host:port), username and password.

3. Use it in the browser or in scripts

   In a browser, connect the Proxy302 extension (HTTP) or paste the proxy into an antidetect-browser profile, then open etherscan.io. In scripts, pass the proxy URL and your Etherscan API key as in the example below.

4. Stay inside your plan

   Throttle scripts to your plan's calls per second and per day. If a chain answers that it needs a paid plan, upgrade the Etherscan plan — a different IP won't change that.

   Expected result The script prints the balance and the latest transactions without rate-limit errors.

API V2 takes chainid plus your key, and one key covers every supported chain. The sleep keeps the script under the free plan's 3 calls per second, and passing proxies on each call keeps environment proxy settings from overriding it.
